Compositions vs. Web Sites?

If you walk into the typical classroom and ask the students if they want to write a composition, the reaction will not exactly be enthusiastic. Ask the same group if they would like to create a website and the answers will probably be very different. In fact, the two are exactly the same! Here is an example of a website and a composition that contain the same information.

Today's youth are fascinated by the Internet. They enjoy surfing and would enjoy creating their own websites if the opportunity was presented. This interest in the Internet can be used to motivate them to write what we call compositions. It's all in the way that it is presented.

Software is available that allows you to create a website much like you use your favorite word processor. Software such as Mozilla Composer is available for Windows and Macs. The best thing about Composer is that it is free. For information on how to construct Web pages using Composer click here.

Once students create their own Web pages the whole class can create a site. A simple site can include information from everyone in the class. All you need is a link to each person's work. An example of a class site is here.
