Web Site Checklist for Teachers

One of the most frequently asked questions about school web sites is what to put on it. The answer ranges from basics like the school's address and contact information to examples of student projects. Here is a list of items that are frequently found on school sites as well as resources that can be used to help create effective school sites.
 

address·make sure that the school address is clearly listed

calendar of events·folks want to know what is happening in the school

class sites·individual class sites should be on the site

directions·provide directions to the school by car, bus and train

email·provide at least one email address

exemplary work·should be online

fax number·provide at least one fax number

fun area·places where students can have "fun" should be available to encourage them to return to the site

homework·teachers can post homework assignments

interactive area·chat rooms and/or message boards are helpful in creating interaction between the school and parents

links·everyone likes to find useful links

list of staff·provide a list of names of teachers, administrators and others as well as ways to reach them

mission statement· include the school's mission statement on the site

newsletter·an emailed and/or online newsletter provides an excellent way of providing on-going contact with the community

parental info·parent associations can provide information on the site

principal's name·the person in charge of the school should be identified on the site

professional development area·teachers should have resources that could help them

puzzles·one fun activity is to provide puzzles

quizzes·online practice quizzes can help parents and students prepare for tests

review·teacher made review materials and/or links to content specific materials should be available

school rules·rules and policies that apply to all students should be posted

student activities·student organizations should have an opportunity to communicate with students online

student projects·on-going student projects can be updated online

teacher sites·teachers should have an opportunity to create sites

telephone number· at least one telephone number should be provided

test schedule·school wide testing schedule should be available

tests·teacher specific test information should be posted

tutorials·provide tutorials that explain how to use the Internet as well as how you use your site for those who are new to the online experience

usage policy·all students and staff members should be aware of the Internet usage policy of the Board of Education as well as the district and school
